Activities are taking place in England to mark the 60th anniversary of the arrival of HMS Windrush, the ship which brought the first wave of Caribbean immigrants to the UK. Mostofthe 500caribbean men and women who enduredthe 8000 mile voyage onthe ss Empire Windrush landed at Tilbury Docks on June 21st 1948. It was the start of a period of migration from the West Indies which continued until the 1960s.
Many of them did not intend to stay for more than a few years - but ended up settling, and having a huge impact on British society.
