The nominations for the 2010 BET awards were announced at the 230 Fifth Rooftop Garden Bar and Restaurant in New York City and celebs with Caribbean heritage are in almost all categories.




Alicia Keys and Melanie Fiona each have four nominations, followed by Rihanna with 3 nods. Nicki Minaj has two on her own, but added with her nominations as part of Young Money she has a total of five nods.

The 10th annual show will feature performances from Trey Songz, Nicki Minaj, Drake, and Diddy-Dirty Money, who was on hand to announce the nominations, along with Oscar nominee Queen Latifah, who will serve as host.

The BET Awards 2010 will air live from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on Sunday, June 27, at 8 p.m. The nominees are listed below.

T.I's first interview since coming out of jail was with Larry King. I enjoyed it and wanted to share a clip. I know he is not from the islands but I am sure he has many fans in the region. I like the fact that he held his own with Larry King, he spoke clearly and eloquently and it was just very relaxed and quite informative.

So I recently announced on the site that Diddy was managing Nicki Minaj and Rick Ross. Hey Billboard said it too! Well now Diddy is saying don't believe the hype.

“For the record, as I said before, don’t believe the rumors. I have not made no announcement yet, don’t believe no rumors about anything y’all hear. me and Nick, we just cool. I like her style. Rick Ross, he’s my brother. There’s no management announcements or none of that. So everybody, worry about what you’re worrying about. It’s all right for people to know each other and have an admiration towards each other and maybe pick each other’s brains for advice. I will be making an announcement in a couple of weeks on some things. But right now, everybody let’s chill out and be cool and stay focused on being positive…”

Rapper Guru (gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal) has died at the age of 43 after a long battle with cancer, according to a statement released by his friend and producer Solar. The New York MC - whose real name was Keith Elam - suffered cardiac arrest on March 2 and had been in a coma.



The world has lost one of the best MCs and hip-hop icons of all-time --my loyal best friend, partner, and brother, Guru," reads the statement. "Guru has been battling cancer for well over a year and has lost his battle! This is a matter that Guru wanted private until he could beat it, but tragically, this did not happen. The cancer took him. Now the world has lost a great man and a true genius."

Accompanying the statement was a letter, apparently written by Guru before his death and passed on to Solar, that would appear to maintain a beef Guru had with DJ Premier. Premier and Guru made up the hip-hop duo Gang Starr, which released six albums between 1989 and 2003.

"I, Guru, am writing this letter to my fans, friends and loved ones around the world. I have had a long battle with cancer and have succumbed to the disease," the letter reads.

"I do not wish my ex-DJ to have anything to do with my name likeness, events, tributes etc. connected in anyway to my situation including any use of my name or circumstance for any reason and I have instructed my lawyers to enforce this," continues the letter. "I had nothing to do with him in life for over 7 years and want nothing to do with him in death. Solar has my life story and is well informed on my family situation, as well as the real reason for separating from my ex-DJ."

In addition to his work with Gang Starr, Guru released an acclaimed series of "Jazzmatazz" albums that fused hip-hop with jazz and featured collaborations with Cortney Pine, Roy Ayers and Kool Keith.

The Belize-born MC spoke to MTV News on Friday (April 9) and announced that the launch of his movement begins next week as he drops his new song "Messiah." MTV News had an early preview of an EZ Elpee-produced track that drops Monday.

Shyne held a press conference in Belize last November, shortly after completing a prison sentence of eight years for two counts of assault as well as reckless endangerment and gun possession in a 1999 shooting (Shyne has maintained his innocence in the incident). He said he hasn't gotten soft over the years; he's gotten wiser.

"I make music about life," he said during the press conference. "One of the greatest musicians was Bob Marley. There was nothing misogynistic about him. But his music, he talked about some harsh realities sometimes. He was tough. I would like to make that type of contribution, that kind of Marvin Gaye contribution, you dig? But at the same time, we curse. At the same time, life is violent. Life is troublesome sometimes. So don't expect my music to be sanitized. I am just going to talk about what's going on in the world."

As you'll hear on "Messiah," Shyne is still firm in his words but insists he's not reckless. Think about the difference between Sonny Corleone and his brother Michael.

"I got the city on my back, pretty women in the sack," the song begins. "Rollin' in the Rolls/ Sit, sittin' in my lap/ This is not a rap, fool, this is not an act/ Welcome to New York, blood, this is where it's at/ Snitches take a nap with the fishes and the rats/ Buried in the dirt where the witnesses is at."

In the chorus, he declares: "This one is a go, but r-r-really though/ If you know the code, then y-y-you could roll/ But if you was a foe, then you get peter-rolled/ But keep that on the low, r-r-really though."

EZ Elpee keeps the track simple but with a threatening synth and bass thump. "You got the crown/ I had to repo that/ Where the East Coast at?/ Mobster music ... Nino's back.

"Tell him to go to school, he don't wanna go/ Shorty wanna roll, how I'mma tell him no?" he continues. "He just like Po/ God knows it better for him to be like Barack O/ My life ain't gold/ One foot is in the grave, the other in the hole/ I wish that I could show, he gonna follow me straight to death row/ Nah, I'mma make sure, he ain't like me/ R-r-really though."

Shyne's new LP doesn't have a release date yet, but he did ink a record deal with Def Jam earlier this year. "Messiah" will drop Monday. No word yet whether it's the official first single or a warm-up record.

Shyne's father, the Prime Minister of Belize Dean Barrow has released his first official statement in support of his estranged son Shyne (Jamal Barrow) since Shyne has returned to Belize after deportation on Tuesday.




After a few days of Shyne being home Prime Minister Barrow expressed his hope that his son will recover from the physical and emotional stress of a decade in prison.
“When I saw him yesterday I was stunned. You don’t go to jail for that period of time. It’s obviously exacting a huge toll on you but I really was shocked to see what it had physically done to him. Clearly it will take some time for him to be able to recover from that experience. Not having gone through it myself, I don’t know whether one is ever able to recover. But it was wonderful to see that he is free at last, good to have him in Belize. Although he appeared physically frail, it was obvious that he was mentally strong as ever. He certainly kept talking to me about what his presence here at home could mean for this country, what opportunities he could cause us to be able to—he could create for us and I was certainly very impressed and gratified by that. I was also greatly pleased that the first thing he did was to go to the Youth Hostel. But I understand that in due course, he will speak to you himself and so perhaps I ought to leave it here. Good to have him home.”


Shyne has rented an entire floor at the Radisson Fort George until construction of an extension on the home of his uncle, Michael Finnegan, is complete. One of Shyne’s attorneys including Professor Charles Ogletree is arriving in Belize on Saturday and is expected to speak to the media.

I mentioned in a previous post that Moses Michaeil Leviy AKA Jamal Barrow AKA Shyne was to be released on October 6th 2009. He was--but not to his family; to Immigration.




According to NY Daily News:

Rap star Shyne, convicted of a club shooting while mentor P.
Diddy beat the rap, was released from prison Tuesday and taken into custody
by immigration officials.
The 30-year-old ex-protégé has a green card but is
facing deportation to his native Belize because of his felony rap sheet, his lawyer
said.
Shyne was on the verge of superstardom when he was arrested in 1999 for
a shooting at Club New York.
Diddy, partying with then-gal
pal Jennifer Lopez, was also charged but acquitted at
trial. His young star got 10 years on assault and weapons charges.
Diddy's
publicist had no comment on Shyne's legal woes Tuesday, but the mogul recently
told Hot 97 that he spoke with Shyne in prison.
"He
sounded like he was in good spirits," Diddy said.
"I know he can't wait to
get home. I know he is definitely going to heat the whole scene up. He was
definitely one of the talented young artists that I had the pleasure to work
with."
Shyne was dropped from Diddy's Bad Boy Records in 2003. A year later, the inmate
blasted his former patron, claiming he betrayed him.
In an interview with
Vibe, Shyne said Diddy convinced a friend to lie on the stand and say he pulled
out his gun and opened fire in the Times Square club without provocation.
"As my
homeboy, how you gonna put somebody on the stand whose lie could put me behind
bars for 25 years?" said Shyne, who claimed he shot in self-defense.
Although
he still had years left on his sentence, Def Jam signed him to a $3 million contract in
2004. It released an album, "Godfather...Buried Alive," containing material
recorded before the arrest, but it tanked.
Recently, Jay-Z denied a report that he had visited Shyne at
the Woodbourne Correctional Facility to sign him to a
record deal.
The performer's lawyer, Oscar Michelen, said his client "is anxious to get
released."
"He is looking forward to seeing his family and being able to be
free to do what he wants to do," he said.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesman Mike Gilhooly would only say that Shyne was in
custody for being in violation of U.S. immigration law."
Shyne's real name was Jamal Barrow until he changed it to Moses Leviy in recognition of his Jewish mother.
His father is now the prime minister of Belize.

This happens all the time to men and women a-like. It is just receiving this much focus due to Shyne's high profile. This raises an important issue though. Who is responsible for deported crimminals? The island that gave birth to them or the country like America where they honed their skills and committed their crimes. Now I am not saying that someone who is deported cannot assimilate into what ever Caribbean island they were sent too and become good citizens who contribute to it's development. But how many of you know some guy that left the island when he was 21/2 years old, lived on the streets hustling, gets busted and sent to an island that he has never seen since he left. What does the American government think is gonna happen when he gets there? Hmmm. My bet he will do what he does best and the local system will have to deal with it. But guess what America is still affected. Cause when tourist come and get robbed, or people snorting coke that pass through the region, or he get some fake documents and go back foreign back door style, the problem has not gone away. Something to ponder my people.
All the best to Shyne. I doubt he is gonna want any special treatment from Prime Minister Dean Barrow who publicly stated that Jamal was 'unwanted.' At least he is free. It is totally up to him where he wants his life to go.

Sean Paul might be in Switzerland, but that won't stop his fourth studio album, Imperial Blaze, from continuing to blaze fire on the Billboard charts in the US.

The album, his first in four years, has debuted at #1 on the Billboard Rap Album charts, toppling the likes of Eminem, Fabolous and Twista to top the charts.

This is his first time atop the rap album charts, and his second time on the Billboard Rap Album charts overall as his third studio album, The Trinity, peaked at #3 on the rap charts in 2005. It is also the first time a Jamaican artiste is topping that chart.

Sean Paul is also sitting comfortably atop the Billboard Reggae Album Charts, ahead of a Bob Marley compilation, Ziggy Marley's Family Time, and VP Record's Reggae Gold.

Imperial Blaze is heading for international success, debuting at #1 when it was released in the dancehall-hungry Asian nation of Japan last week, selling upwards of 50,000 copies in its first week. He topped the Oricon Weekly International Album Sales chart, the first time he has done so, and is holding his own on the Billboard Canadian Albums, France Albums, and European Albums with positions #5, #8 and #20 respectively.

Aside from those charts, Imperial Blaze is also #3 on the R&B/Hip Hop Album Charts, #12 on the Billboard 200, and #9 on the Digital Downloads charts.

The platinum-selling dancehall superstar, hailed by Essence.com - the online outfit of the popular North American publication Essence Magazine - as the "dancehall king", is now celebrating his first time atop the competitive rap charts.

"Anytime a song or an album makes it on a chart, I get excited, and now to be able to top the Billboard Top Rap Album charts is something that I'm especially excited about. Not because it's the Billboard charts, but because it's a dancehall album. It's made in Jamaica by Jamaicans. So I didn't top the Billboard Rap Album Charts, Jamaica did," said Sean Paul from Switzerland.

Jay Leno's new prime-time series is going to kick off with a performance by Jay-Z, Rihanna and Kanye West.

NBC said the three singers will perform together on "Run This Town," a tune from Jay-Z's new album, on the Sept. 14 debut of "The Jay Leno Show." The The network and Leno said this week that there will be fewer musical acts. They also said he will feature interesting combinations of performers.

Leno stepped down as "Tonight" host in May. He said that he'll expect guests on his new show to do more than talk — like, for example, race electric cars on a track being built near his NBC studio in Burbank.

The series will air weekdays at 10 p.m. EDT.

[Jamal Barrow the rapper known as Shyne learned recently] that he will be given the minimum in regards to his parole, according to his attorney, Oscar Michelen. Through an interview with HipHopDX, Michelen informed all of the conditions and arrangements made as it pertained to his parole release.

“He gave him two-and-a-half [years], which was the minimum. The D.A. had requested the maximum, five years… [Shyne] got a chance to address the court today. He did address the court and asked court to consider not giving him any post release supervision at all. But the court said that it was obligated to do so. And [the judge] pointed out that he agreed with our argument [and so] he's gonna give us the minimum… And we're just thankful that the court read our sentencing memorandums and agreed with our position. We now wait for his release, which should be October 6th.”

Some may question why the sentence is coming now, especially since the rapper has already served 8 _ of his 10 required years. Michelen explained that when he was sentenced in March 2001, he wasn't given a parole sentence which was actually mandatory. As a result, the Correction Department made a request for the court to re-sentence him.

Life behind bars has caused a change in the rapper. Spiritually, the man once known as Jamel Barrow has now become a devout Orthodox Jew and changed his name to Moses Michael Leviy.

Initial fears came from the client and his attorney if Shyne were given the full five year parole term it would limit him from making rounds and even making a consideration to music as he would not be allowed to leave the state of New York and he would have constant surveillance on him as he would have to be given permission to engage in most activities as an artist. He will, however, still have particular restrictions to deal with after his release in October, according to Michelen.

“[The] parole [board] will decide [any restrictions],” he noted. “The usual parameters are you can't leave the state without prior permission. If you change your address you have to give them notice. You can be randomly drug tested. They could even search your home randomly without notice. And the most important [parameter of parole] is if you were to commit a crime, or get re-arrested for anything, you can face jail for the full two-and-a-half years of your PRS [post release supervision].”

Although the last thing that might be in the mind of Shyne is music, there have been rumors that he has been in talks with Jay-Z to be yet another recruit for his new Roc Nation imprint. The rapper allegedly went to speak with Shyne last Friday to discuss the possibility of him signing. Nothing has been confirmed from this rumor, however.

Shyne has been incarcerated since his involvement in a shooting on December 27, 1999 at Club New York. At the time he was under the Bad Boy label and was in the company of then Puff Daddy and his former girlfriend Jennifer Lopez. Although there seems to be no need for worry or retaliation, Shyne has stated that he knows his former boss had a hand in him living behind bars and snitched on him in some form.

Almost inevitably, a misstep on Havana's cracked and uneven concrete sends her pitching forward.

"Sorry, I'm going again," giggles singer and rapper Lumidee, regaining her balance and turning sharply on the same heel that nearly toppled her to head back down the block.

"Yeah," director Michel Miglis yells from behind a camera perched on a second-floor balcony over her head. "And don't smile!"

Best-known for her summer smash of six years ago, "Never Leave You" — think "Uh Oooh, Uh Oooh" — 24-year-old Lumidee has come to Cuba to finish a video for Iranian-born signer Arash Labaf's song "Kandi," to which she contributed rap solos.

It's Labaf's third video in Cuba, but including Lumidee makes the production one of very few music videos filmed on the island to feature an American. Forty-seven years of U.S. economic sanctions have choked off nearly all travel and trade between the two countries.

Her trip to Cuba is more proof that while the Obama administration and the government of Cuba talk tentatively about improving relations, the entertainment world is already well into the thaw.

"When I heard the shoot was in Cuba I panicked. I didn't know what to expect, and I was a little bit scared to come," said Lumidee, who was born Lumiana DeRosa Cedeno.

"You don't know how it's going to be. Like you're not wanted here, and the people would not like you," she said. "But Cubans just seem happy and laid back."

The video, in which Labaf plays himself and three goofball characters vying for the girl, includes shots on a beach east of Havana and at the famed Bacardi Building downtown, which served as headquarters of the rum giant before it fled the island after Fidel Castro took power in 1959.

U.S. jazz and folk musicians have often worked with Cuban colleagues. Collaborations have included Ry Cooder in the Buena Vista Social Club recordings of the 1990s and jazz festival appearances by the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, Max Roach, Charlie Haden and Jack DeJohnette.

Audioslave broke the decades-long barrier to U.S. rock concerts in Cuba with a thundering show on the Cuban capital's seaside Malecon in 2005. But Washington's trade sanctions and the Cuban government's ambivalence toward rock and rap have kept most American musicians away.

Lumidee, who is of Puerto Rican heritage, grew up in Spanish Harlem. She and an entourage including her manager and husband, makeup artist and a DJ friend had to fly through a third country because of their U.S. passports. She asked that her full itinerary not be published to avoid problems with American authorities.
