Four-time calypso and 5-time road march winner Dennison “King Dice” Joseph promises a spectacular event for patrons attending the King Dice and Friends Father’s Day Concert on Saturday June 19th at Dominica’s Harlem Plaza.

According to MC and co-organizer, Val “Young Bull” Cuffy, this concert was organized especially with fathers in mind. “Mother’s Day gets a great deal of coverage and is such a big event in the annual calendar; we want to do the same for fathers. They deserve their roses too.” He added, “We have for them a strong lineup of popular local artists including headliner King Dice a favorite of many Dominicans."

King Dice will ring in Father’s Day with a variety of songs from his repertoire including moving social commentaries like “(Help) My Brothers’ For Me”, “Higher” as well as the Reggae lovers’ anthem “Chance”. Having not performed at Calypso Finals this year, King Dice believes that this show will be a treat for the fans. “I will deliver like I am at the finals, so they can expect props, extras, wardrobe changes, and stage effects.” Dice, who was approached by Cuffy with the idea for the show, also believes in the importance of recognizing and celebrating fatherhood. “I am a father too and it’s a great feeling to honor dads like this. I think it will be a great show full of love and positive energy.”

Preceding Dice on stage will be local Reggae artists Dr. Silk, Atunyah and Abessah. The nine performing calypsonians are: Sye, De Professor (Jr. Calypso Monarch 2009 & 2010), Soul Puss, Hunter (Former Calypso King), Tasha P, Yakima, Checker, Triumph and Prosper.

Tickets for the show, which starts at 9PM, costs $30.00 and $50.00 VIP. It is sponsored by LIME as well as Bulls Eye Pharmacy, Heineken, Jolly’s Pharmacy, Minya’s 7-11 and Courts.

ABOUT KING DICE

A former Junior Calypso Monarch, Dennison “King Dice” Joseph is the youngest and only calypsonian to win four national crowns and five consecutive road march titles in Dominica calypso history. His first win was in 2004 with the songs “Peace Is My Business", dedicated to world leaders, and the second round crowd pleaser "Animal Farm," which compared politicians to various farm animals. In 2005 he captured the crown with his songs "Help My Brother For Me” and the political satire “Puppet Master." On February 25th 2006, King Dice made history by becoming the third but youngest calypsonian in 30 years to win 3 calypso crowns in 3 consecutive years, accomplishing what many veteran calypsonians have yet been able to do. "These Are The Days" and "I Eh Fraid Of Them" were the two songs he performed that night. Although Dice was definitely the crowd favorite on the night of February 17th 2007, where he performed "Lights" and "Follow Your Leader;" He placed 4th out of nine other calypsonians. Not breaking from the recipe that secured his prior wins, Dice with the help of songwriter Pat Aaron came back a year later to capture the crown with "Roll The Dice And See" and "On My Own." By then he had won the road march five times in a row with the songs "Tarzan"-2003, "Animal Farm-2004, "Puppet Master"-2005, "I Eh Fraid"-2006 and "Lights"-2007.

King Dice is presently contracted as the face of Heineken Beer in Dominica. He has received several awards for his accomplishments in the calypso arena including A Young Achievers Award in 2004 from the Commonwealth of Dominica Ministry of Education, Youth Affairs, Sports and Human Resource Development for his contribution to culture. In July 2006, he became a member of the Elite- Tri Peat Club. Along with the other two calypsonians who have won 3 consecutive crowns he received his blue 3 peat jacket from the University of the West Indies in Dominica and Pawol Inc. He also received in 2006 a Youth Ambassador Award from the National Youth Council of Dominica in recognition of his contribution to calypso art form and for his 3-peat achievement. King Dice has taken part in workshops and forums on the island, with several groups including the Optimist Club who's main focus is youth development. In 2006 he released his 13 track debut CD entitled A Little Higher, co produced by himself and his writer Pat Aaron, consisting of all his calypsos from as far back as 2003, the ever popular “Chance,” "Hold On To Cricket", a song for cricket fans all over the Caribbean, urging them to have faith in the west Indies cricket team, and a few other party tunes. His latest album is a compilation of his hits called

Currently on hiatus from formal calypso competition, Dice hopes to return to the big stage in 2011. In the meantime he performs for fans in Dominica and the world at stageshows, music festivals and other events.

I don't know cricket. I probably say that every time I write a post about the sport. I do know that their is a bias against small island players in the sport. For years I have been hearing of how Shane Shillingford like other Dominicans before him, has been denied a spot on the West Indies Cricket Team. Well, he is finally there and guess what??? His first test match he is already making a name for himself and pulling up the team from their blistering, losing streak.

According to DigicelCricket.com

Debutant off spinner Shane Shillingford made the best of a rain curtailed and soggy first day of the First Digicel Test at the Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad. The tall Dominican enjoyed a fine start to his international career in grim conditions, as he extracted the two South African openers at a cost of five miserly runs from a six over spell.
The Proteas – the second highest ranking Test team in the world – closed the day in the uncomfortable position of 70 for 3, with veteran batting maestro Jacques Kallis on 6 and nightwatchman Paul Harris not yet off the mark.

Shillingford, delivering with a bounding run up and sprightly action, accounted for Alviro Petersen via the lbw route for 31 and Captain Graeme Smith was caught at first slip by his nemesis Dwayne Bravo for 23.

The day’s proceedings left the West Indies in the unfamiliar position of a slight ascendency on the opening day of a Test match against a top ranked side.

Dominican-born, Bronx-reared, Hip-Hopera artist marie-claire is the only regional performer outside of Antigua to perform at the two-night Love Is All We Need concert at the Sugar Ridge Hotel which takes place June 19th and 20th. On the first night, dubbed “Queens of State,” she will join Antiguan singer Shermain Jeremy as the opening act for headliner Faith Evans, the Grammy-winning, RnB powerhouse from the US. marie-claire will also be present at several pre-concert press events, including a in-store reception at Colombian Emeralds.

According to Director of the US Tourism Team Derede Samuel-Whitlock, marie-claire brings something new and fresh to the mix. “Overall we want to create something entirely different from the existing festivals that currently exist throughout the Caribbean. In addition, the artists will become in involved in volunteerism, and do some charity work. I believe marie-claire has the right personality and image for the entire experience.”

The Father’s Day weekend event will coincide with the fourth annual Destination Wedding ceremony. New York couple, Doug Singer and Charmaine Bennett will wed in the Caribbean’s premier romance destination, during Antigua’s official month for romance. Upon arrival on Friday June 18th, they will select their rings at Colombian Emeralds accompanied by tourism officials, members of the media and performers including marie-claire. The lucky pair will wed the following day at 6 pm during a private ceremony at Sugar Ridge’s Carmichael’s Restaurant; after which there will be a Vegas-style procession to kick off the concert!

On June 20th, Father’s Day, renowned actor, and director Malik Yoba of Why Did I Get Married Too fame will host the “Men of Soul” concert featuring Ginuwine (another RnB great), and local artistes Kenne Blessing and the legendary King Short Shirt.

Both nights will feature several romance-themed activities including “a kissing booth, where couples will be photographed while kissing; cooking demonstrations with Malik Yoba making aphrodisiacs with a local chef; as well as cultural performances.” says Samuel-Whitlock.

Love Is All We Need replaces the Romantic Rhythms concert which pulled in up to ten thousand visitors in 2008. When asked about turnout at the 1300-capacity Sugar Ridge hotel Ms Samuel-Whitlock.states “Clearly, the theme of romance resonated with Romantic Rhythms and there is significant potential to build brand equity. We also know that bookings for the month of June are particularly strong, especially with honeymooners, so we will also appeal to the visitors who are already here. We also believe that marie-claire will help bring out the large Dominican following in Antigua and Barbuda as she did during her performance at Russell's earlier this year.”

Fans can look forward to several songs from her debut album the dreamland project which will feature operatic renditions of reggae standards as well as some original pieces.

Tickets for Love Is All You Need concert are US $50 per person for each night or US $80 for both nights. For ticketing and other information call Sugar Ridge Hotel on 562 7700 or Antigua’s Ministry of Tourism on 562 4756.

ABOUT MARIE-CLAIRE

marie-claire is an Italian-trained opera singer who has performed at Carnegie Hall and who’s songs have been featured in feature films such as Lovin Jezebel and The Roommate. She spent time in front of the camera as a cast member on the second season of Chapelle’s Show on Comedy Central. Since marie-claire’s return to her homeland Dominica, she has through her girlfullofgold productions ltd, produced and hosted local music programmes, while still making time to perform at events such as LIME Creole in the Park and various private functions. marie-claire has performed at several regional events including Ocho Rios Jazz Festival, Jamaica Jazz and Blues and Love Fest in St. Lucia. Venues such as Russell’s in Antigua and Weekenz, Christopher’s Jazz Café and Red Bones Blues Café, in Jamaica are almost second homes, for the celebrated singer.

marie-claire’s passion is to seamlessly blend opera and hip-hop, as she finds the two genres covering the same themes with their highly dramatic lyrics, just listen to her amazing voice on DJ Logic’s The Anomaly, or her songs “Red” and “Desperation.” Now it is time to condense this blend of Opera, Hip-Hop and Reggae into a mature, sexy, and delightful album- a fitting description of marie-claire herself. Look out for the dreamland project which will feature marie-claire singing celebrated reggae songs (like Bunny Wailer’s “Dreamland”) in Opera, and will include some original reggae selections such as “Care For You” a sweet and timeless lover’s rock with and old soul. This girl full of gold is a treasure you don’t want to miss!

Dominican-born, New Jersey-based, Reggae artist King Tappa hopes that the message in his song “Domestic Violence” will resonate with listeners and bring greater awareness of the effects of domestic violence on women and children. As Father’s Day approaches, his message that parents’ actions affect their children could not be more timely.

He says he was inspired to write the song not only because of stories shared with him by his friends, but because he too has also witnessed domestic violence first hand. Additionally, co-writing the song with Melissa Casimir allowed for a broader perspective, which led to an in depth discussion of the issues and set in motion the concept for the video which depicts the issue from the point of view of the child.

According to King Tappa, “The video was shot that way because we wanted to let the audience know the effect that violence can have on kids. The main character was surrounded by a lot of violence but she didn't give up on her education, and despite being sad, she still comforted her mom, who was being abused, and remained a strong figure for her family.”

His message to parents, “Spend as much time with your kids as possible because they need it. In the world that we're living in right now there's too much negativity surrounding us and we as parents should teach our children good values and show them love—not only by words but by example. Kids look up to their dads, so if a father is showing positive things most likely the kid will follow that path.

When it comes to domestic violence, says King Tappa, most people don't know the signs and those who do won't address it. “The most important message here is to seek help, speak about it.” He is doing his part with this song which encourages the victims of domestic abuse to find a partner who will treat you like a good woman/who will hold you on a pedestal/who praises you for all the good you do.

“Domestic Violence” was produced by Martiniquean Daniel "Don Shorty Productions" Dubois, on the Head In Stars Riddim. The official video for the song was directed by Mo Green of Cape Verde. The video has been picked up for rotation by Tempo and has been presented to several other networks including BET. Look out for more songs from King Tappa this year and please support his fifth annual Project Book Bag drive aimed at offering literary support for Dominica’s youth.

Gospel singer Carlene Davis is looking forward to ministering to loyal patrons at the 5th Annual Gospel Explosion on the Newtown Savanna tonight. No stranger to Dominica, Ms. Davis has visited the island at least six times all spaced out, "so each time I come it's like I've only just begun.

Of her performance tonight she says" I am hoping that lives will be changed, especially for the youngsters who are coming out. I hope that they would feel as if they accomplished something; that they know who they are; that they have purpose in their lives and that they can step out and fulfill that vision that's on their heart, that dream that's inside of them.

Speaking of the youth and the incorporating of Gospel in different genres like Dancehall and
Soca, she states "the way I look at it, with every region, every territory, God has given us something unique to work with. With each genre, whether RnB, Soca, Dancehall,Reggae-this is what God has given us, and there's nothing with the riddim, it's the message that makes the difference. so music is not immoral, its the message. So once they're declaring Christ is Lord, we're good to go.

She can't stop gushing about the green and lush Dominican vegetation, the relaxing atmosphere the friendly people. Luckily, she got a chance to take a break from media engagements and rehearsals to relax at screws spa. He reaction when stepping into the warm mineral pool? A fervent Glory! and Hallelujah!

Hopefully she is rested and ready to deliver a powerful and entertaining (remember she wants to "party for Jesus") ministry tonight. Lookout for a love-themed album from her in the near future.

Joining Carlene on stage will be fellow Jamaican Ordinary AKA Mr. Amen, Koen Duncan from Trinidad & Tobago, and from Dominica Brother's of Resistance, Michael Ferrol, Beyond and DJ Alfy.

St. Lucia has become the latest Caribbean Community (Caricom) country to place a ban on Jamaican dancehall singer, Vybz Kartel, who had been scheduled to perform here at the end of the month.

A statement from the St Lucian government today noted that in deciding whether or not to grant a work permit to the singer, the government had deliberately refrained from rushing to a judgement by establishing an adhoc committee to discuss the request from the promoters.

It said that the committee was required to look at a number of factors, including a comprehensive research of the history of the artiste, solicit views and opinions of key institutions and organisations in the country and determine the general impact of the artiste’s performance on the population, particularly the youth.

“Having looked carefully at the significant amount of information presented, and considering the views and opinions of the many individuals and institutions as well as available options, the Government of St Lucia through the Ministry of Labour, Information and Broadcasting has decided not to grant a work permits to Mr Adidja Azim Palmer otherwise known as Vybz Kartel for performances at the Hot FM promoted Supreme Weekend show scheduled for April 30 and May 1, 2010.
“In light of the foregoing, and in order to ensure consistency and to avoid discrimination, Government has decided that in going forward, it is essential to establish a permanent committee to review applications for artistes seeking permits to perform in St Lucia,” the statement added.

Read more about it HERE.

I am all for protecting the youth, but I think all this banning is going a little too far. If you blame Vybz Kartel for youth violence then what's to stop beer companies for being blamed for teenage pregnancies? There are surveys done which link underage drinking with increase in sexual behaviour among teens. Who is taking responsibility for that??? Which Caribbean governments are stepping up to the plate and holding people accountable??? What about prominent leaders who are involved in the drug trade??? I am in no way making excuses for Kartel, but artists have a right to creative freedom and expression and I just wonder how much of this is really about protecting our young???

Think about it? How many school age children will go to the event ??? I'm sure some will, but by and large I expect the majority would be working adults. Moreover, these teenagers that the government wants to protect know Kartel's music from Internet downloads, or listening to them on the radio. In Dominica Mavado performed a while back and there was so much hoopla about whether he should be banned or not. He came did his thing, made his money and that was that. There was no major incident, that I am aware of.Young people listen to him, and they listen to other acts including Vegas and Bounty Killer. But they listen to Miley Cyrus too and Rihanna (who sings about suicide and making her "Rude Boy" get it up) and MFR and Triple Kay.

I am saying all this to say basically I feel that who wants to go to Kartel show go and who don't want to go stay home. It's not everything he sings I like, it's not everything he sings I don't like. I mostly listen to clean versions of his songs. I know every one is not me, ray-ray ray-rah-rah-rah, but as an artist too I just have to wonder, how do we weigh who's rights matter more?

I was not present for this event but I really like this review of the concert by Celia Sorhanido. Enjoy and make sure to click the link to view her pics!

In January I attended the 1st Dominica “Year of the Child” Concert held at Krazy Kokonuts in Roseau. It was a top class reggae event with an impressive line-up of stars including Tony Rebel, Queen Ifrica & Duane Stephenson as well as our own local talent in the form of Nelly Stharre, Fanatik Band, Aima Moses, Dr. Silk, Natural Vybz and others. Most agreed it was a success and the trouble free, “good vibes”, entertaining event raised ECD$20,000 for Camp Rescue, a charity organization providing much needed life skills to at risk youth.

When I heard that the 2nd concert was going to be a Jazz concert held at the State House grounds, I must admit I thought it was a seriously brave move and I was a little worried for the organisers. It’s one thing for the hard working and well respected Nelly Stharre to have the support of her friends in organising a reggae event at a popular venue but a whole other thing to organise a Jazz event at a venue I have never seen used for a music concert. Although we have our share of die-hard Jazz fans, the genre has not received massive popularity in Dominica as shown in the demise of the missed “Jazz Walk”.

The event was held on March 27th and was due to start at 6pm. The weather was great and people started arriving before 6pm which was an encouraging sign but took the organisers by surprise; the food and drink stalls were not ready (for most events you can normally safely expect that things will not get going until at least half an hour after the scheduled start time). From then on there was a steady flow of people and soon it was apparent that the crowd numbers were going to be good.

Arturo Tappin captured in a candid moment! (Photo by Celia Sorhaindo)

Dominican flutists opened the proceedings with the National Anthem and Athie Martin was the competent MC. The line up was: Steel pan with Athie Martin, his brother Julie & friends (DMA), Kannick (GLP), Gelina Fontaine and Ross Leblanc (DMA), Armstrong James and his “Jazz Walk” band (DMA), Jahkoostick Musical Ensemble (JAM), Nelly Stharre (DMA), Free Joseph and friends (DMA), Marie-Claire Giraud (DMA), Arturo Tappin (BRB), Cornell Phillip & Athie Martin (DMA) and Arturo Sandoval (CUB).
There was also a surprise visit from Ms Barbados Leah Marville who has a charity called The Love Campaign which helps children with HIV/AIDS.

All the bands looked like they were genuinely having a good time and the crowd seemed to be enjoying the mellow vibe too. It was probably a long time since many had heard live Jazz in Dominica.

I enjoyed them all but my personal favourite of the night was Arturo Tappin. What a cool dude with his super long locks. I just loved his “down to earth” energy. An amazing entertainer, at one point he took off his shoes, rolled up his trousers and jumped of the stage to play bare foot walking through the crowd. He was also really approachable and accommodating for signatures and photos.

It turned out to be a fab concert and I was so glad my worries were allayed.
The rain, although needed, delayed things slightly and sent some people scurrying for shelter and sent others home prematurely. There were also some minor mike/sound issues and a couple of the performances went on a little too long but overall I thought the Jazz concert was a resounding success.

What really made this event extra special was not just the great line up, it was the attention to the little details which hinted that some serious effort and thought had been invested. Bamboo flambeau’s, potted plants, draped fabric for stage back drop, seating, tables with candles and an area for local artisans to display and sell their arts & craft on the venue grounds, created just the right ambience for this type of concert. Paintings by local artists Earl Etienne, Ellingsworth Moses and Petros Meaza & CDs, body oils and hand made greeting cards were on sale but it was a shame more artisans did not take up the offer to display.

BET Centric and LIAT have joined Dominica Beverage and Brewery Ltd., Fort Young Hotel, and LIME as sponsors of the second in the Year of the Child Concert Series headlined by Arturo Sandoval, Arturo Tapin, marie-claire and Jakoostick Musical Ensemble.

Footage from the jazz-themed event will be shown on SPLASH!, a BET Centric programme featuring Caribbean lifestyle and music. According to Splash’s executive producer Kibwe McGann, one of its mandates is to show the charitable efforts of Caribbean entertainers. “We recently featured Shaggy’s concert benefiting the Bustamante Children’s Hospital in Jamaica, for example. Also, one of our hosts Leah Marville, has a charity called The Love Campaign, which focuses on children living with HIV/AIDS. Year of the Child deals with charity as well as music, thus we saw that we could easily merge both products.” Leah will be joined by co-host Crystal Cunningham for the live taping that will air in late April/early May.

LIAT is also assisting this effort by providing travel for artists to Dominica. In addition, the event will receive coverage in the airline’s in-flight magazine Zing.

According to Year of the Child Concert Committee member Anna Raffoul, these two major sponsorships bode well for the organization as they will directly result in greater exposure to the public. “Millions of BET Centric Viewers and thousands of LIAT passengers will learn about what we are trying to accomplish with this concert series. It is our hope that they will also become aware of the issues we are dealing with such as at risk youth, HIV/AIDS, education for example, and find their own way of contributing whether it is by attending a future show or donating directly to a charitable organization of their choosing.”

The concert which takes place on March 27th at the Dominica State House Grounds, will feature 4-time Grammy award winning, Cuban-born Trumpeter Arturo Sandoval, Jazz Saxophonist Arturo Tapin of Barbados, Jakoostick Musical Ensemble from Jamaica and local Opera singer marie-claire who is also part of the organizing committee. Guest artistes from Guadeloupe, Trinidad and Dominica will also perform on the show dubbed “Music For Life.” Proceeds will assist the National HIV/AIDS programme in their Prevention of Mother To Child Transmission (PMTCT) project as well as Fouche La Vie, whose mission is “to create a supportive, protective, healthy enabling environment for orphans and vulnerable children affected by or infected with HIV and AIDS in Dominica.”

The first Year of the Child Concert, headlined by Reggae artists Queen Ifrica, Tony Rebel and Nelly Stharre was held on January 9th at Krazy Koconuts. A check for ECD$20,000.00 from its proceeds was presented to Camp Rescue, an organization providing life skills to at risk youth. The five members of the Year of the Child Concert Series Committee—Cornell Phillip, Anna Raffoul, Emile Raffoul, marie-claire, and Nelly Stharre, are encouraged by the support of the Dominican public towards their efforts to enhance the lives of local children. Look out for upcoming shows throughout 2010 featuring a variety of Caribbean talent at various locations throughout the island.

Ocean Inn and Atigua and Calibishe Cove Dominica were two Caribbean destinations listed in the top ten Best Affordable Beach Resorts on Yahoo! Travel.

According to the site:

Judging by the multimillion dollar yachts moored in English Harbour, you wouldn’t expect to find an affordable hotel for miles. But that’s not the case: the intimate Ocean Inn, whose wooden walkways connect 12 bright rooms, is a steal. Try No. 3, which goes for the same price as a standard room but has a balcony thrown in for free, or one of the two suites in the master cottage, perfect for privacy seekers

The diminutive Calibishie Cove — on the mountainous island’s beach-studded northeastern corner — is a colonial-style hotel with just four rooms, each with platform beds, large shutters, and a private patio overlooking the Caribbean Sea. Snorkel with sea horses and turtles in the warm waters off the near-empty Hodges Beach; or arrange for a picnic lunch of spiny lobster, borrow one of the hotel’s kayaks, and head to Treasure Island, an uninhabited islet 10 minutes away
