You mi want every body dun know/ ah you alone can make me feel Oh so Good/uh-uh-uh Oh so Good yah.....Tell me you've heard this catchy Soca err Reggae chune.....LOL...so really which is it??? Soca or Reggae? Well that is all part of the discussion that we are continuing here in our special Reggae month feature. What is Reggae? Is it still Reggae when it's fused with other genres? These are some of the issues we touch in our special 20 Questions feature during the month of February. Let's see what Denyque Dontre, rising Reggae star and the face of Wray and Nephew has to say about it.
1. Do you remember your first introduction to Reggae music?
I was a toddler bobbing my head to Bob Marley tunes. Haha. My mom would listen to them most times & I grew to love them.
2. When people think of Reggae they generally think Bob Marley, peace, positive vibrations, conscious lyrics. How do YOU define Reggae and what does it mean to you?
For me, Reggae is definitely a means of emotional expression. Recent reggae/culture songs have a lot of depth & emotion and I think that's what I love so much about it. Eg. I-Octane's song Lose A Friend.. Amazing song.
3. I personally think that Reggae is a lot about saying what you mean and meaning what you say. Do you feel any pressure from the commercialization of music to say things just to sell records?
I think a lot of records do just that but reggae is just more straight forward. I feel no pressure whatsoever right now because music is a medium of expression.
4. Are there any trends in the industry that you welcome and/or that you would like to see go away?
I definitely welcome the trends that make sense.
5. What would you say is your greatest contribution to Reggae music thus far?
I would say the connection people have with my music. I love how I have grown & continue to grow in the industry. Always giving thanks!
6. Reggae has been blended with so many genres from opera to Rock and Roll, to Hip-Hop and even Bangra. Is this a plus for the industry or a loss of some sort?
It's always a plus in my eyes because we as a people, especially musically, love when we can vibe certain things & break new ground.
7. Is Reggae month really necessary? What meaning does it hold for you?
It does have it's place. For me Reggae Month means going back to your roots & it's my birth month soo I'm not complaining :)

Kingston, Jamaica: It's not what you do, but it's HOW you do it that makes the difference. This is exactly what the Youth View Awards nominated Favourite / Best New Artiste of 2009, rising superstar DENYQUE is proving every time she steps on stage. After tearing up STING 2009 to "PIECES" with her debut performance, 2010 has gone off to a great start for the "Can't Breathe" singer.
On Saturday January 30, 2010, Red Bull invited DENYQUE to be a celebrity guest and performer at their Football Street Style competition hosted at the Emancipation Park in Kingston, Jamaica. She started her performance with the Don Corleon produced "Pieces" on the Feminine Riddim where she began strutting across the stage with powerful and controlled vocals.
She continued with a debut performance of her new single "Oh So Good" which is produced by Equiknox Music on their Kamera Trick riddim released on January 10, 2010. She closed her performance with her first single "Can't Breathe" which is still breaking new ground since March 2009. On exiting the stage, the MC, Otis Hamilton stated "From last year, DENYQUE has come a long way and I didn't know she would be so successful in such a short space of time".
On Friday January 29, 2010, DENYQUE was HU$TLIN' for HAITI at Chilitos with her first ever live performance of her latest single "That Place" by Don Corleon, which was done acapella to an astounding applause from her audience. Her performance was all in aid of Earthquake Relief efforts for Haiti by the Jamaica Red Cross, and the show was produced by CHR Productions.
But it won't stop here, look for DENYQUE to perform as well as present an award at the Youth View Awards on Saturday February 6 where she also hopes to collect the award for Favourite / Best New Artiste in 2009.
Also, in March, DENYQUE will travel to the United States on a month long tour where she is expected to represent, cross over and do extremely well
Jamaica's Youth View Awards 2010 nominated Favourite New Artiste of 2009, DENYQUE is fresh and out with a new single produced by Equiknoxx Music on their Kamera Trick Riddim entitled "Oh So Good" which was released on January 10, 2010.
From overwhelming reviews thus far, the song is doing "OH SO GOOD". The dancehall soca / pop flavored song is already in heavy rotation globally, yes to as far as Ethiopia they are saying that DENYQUE sounds "Oh So Good". Just in time for the Carnival 2010 season in Trinidad & Jamaica, we are expecting this single to do very well.
"Oh So Good" being just her third (3) single in less than a year since her debut release "CAN'T BREATHE" in March of 2009 and then the Don Corleon (Sean Paul ft. Keyshia Cole - Give It Up To Me) produced "PIECES" later in the year, DENYQUE has already graced the stages of some of Jamaica's high profiled events such as Jamaica's Ministry of Health's World AIDS Day concert, Usain Bolt's Celebrity Party Reception, Asafa Powell Foundation's Night On The Track Concert and STING 2009 to name a few. To everyone's amazement, DENYQUE's Sting 2009 Performance video on Youtube had reached 14,960 views in less than three (3) days.
With her momentum growing progressively, DENYQUE goes on a month long tour of the United States in March of 2010 and on her return, expect to see her on event stages all over the world. Local media and fans are touting the 20 year old DENYQUE as the next big Caribbean export since Rihanna.
