Business interests are expecting this year’s Reggae Sumfest to bring a significant jolt to the Montego Bay economy, which should also extend to the wider Jamaica. It is being seen as a welcome ease to the current economic crunch and a catapult for more growth.

Each year, the world- renowned Festival draws thousands of overseas visitors into the city and its environs, and with this influx, there comes a remarkable upswing in commerce and its related benefits. Visitors have been known to travel from as far as Australia to attend the Festival, spending on Jamaican products liberally as they seek to enjoy every aspect of the Jamaican brand. From as far back as 2003, it was predicted that significant foreign exchange would flow into the island during the time of the festival. This year’s Festival should bring substantial benefits to a wide variety of business interests primarily in the second city, but extending to other areas of the island.

“We expect Reggae Sumfest to be a major contributor to the economic landscape for this year,” states Johnny Gourzong, Executive Director of Summerfest Productions, producers of Reggae Sumfest. “This Festival causes people to not just spend on it, but to spend in preparation for it, and in several other endeavours related to it, and this year should be no different.”

This reality has been duly noted by the Montego Bay Chamber of Commerce, which has over 200 members ranging from small family-run enterprises, to large scale businesses such as hotels and resorts. They all thrive from the boom in the various forms of trade which are direct spin-offs from the Festival, during a period that has traditionally been considered slow in that part of the island.

Data from the Montego Bay Chamber of Commerce also indicate that villas, hotels, and guest houses become fully booked, restaurants, cook shops, and cafes get unprecedented patronage, clothing stores, beauty salons and countless other businesses get the spike in activity before, during, and even after the Festival. In addition, the benefits are not confined to the second city, but spread widely to the major towns across the island. The fashion industry is one example, as the clothing stores, the tailors, dressmakers and those that provide accessories get major orders to fill within the period.

With the line-up this year that includes American R&B star Chris Brown, international superstars Shaggy and Beenie Man, Jah Cure, Etana, Queen Ifrica and Mavado, the package again promises to be an excellent lineup, and the expected benefits to the country should follow.

Reggae Sumfest is the most celebrated and supported Reggae festival in Jamaica, and attracts the world’s leading musicians and performers. In its near 20 year history, the show has boasted a superb entertainment package, loaded with the best performances, food, music, and culture. This year’s Festival runs from July 22-24 at Catherine Hall, St James.

Red Stripe is back as the main sponsor of Reggae Sumfest, after a one-year hiatus. The brand now joins a growing list of sponsors which includes Digicel, Iberostar, JTB, and Wisynco, for the 18th staging of the country’s premier Reggae Festival.

With the recent cancellation of the Visas of several prominent Jamaican performers, international reggae star and SoBe/Danger Zone recording artiste Jah Cure has been inspired to pen the visa blues and record the track Save Yourself.

It was 12:05 am on April 1, 2010, so Jah Cure naturally assumed the internet news he was reading about the Unites States canceling the visas of several top Jamaican dancehall artistes was an April Fools’ Day joke. He said: “I couldn't believe that the Jamaican government or the U.S. government would violate the privacy rights of citizens and publish their legal names, their birth dates, their actual Jamaican passport numbers and their U.S. Visa Control numbers, I did not believe it”.

Sadly, by mid-day on April 1st, the news was official; the U.S. Embassy in Kingston, Jamaica had canceled the visas.

While sitting in his living room, Jah Cure said he began to hear the words of his idol Bob Marley singing: “Get Up, Stand Up, Stand Up for Your rights.” Cure immediately felt inspired and compelled to go on record, so he headed straight to the studio and recorded Save Yourself’ as his message to Jamaica and all Caribbean nations.

In the opening lines of the song, Cure exclaims: “You can’t change my pride, you can’t take my power”. Jah Cure urges his Jamaican and Caribbean brethren to save themselves, to save their countries, to save their economies, to save their families, and to save their children. A line of the song is telling: “We must ‘Save Ourselves’ … we must save ourselves from Babylon."

Cure believes that Save Yourself is an appropriate song for the circumstance as he says: “We cannot depend on Big Brother to help us, we must depend on each other and ourselves.

Jah Cure said he is releasing the record via the internet hoping it will challenge his Jamaican brethren to stand up for their rights as he chants at the end of the song: “We have come too far to turn back now, we cannot let them take our freedom or our pride. They can never hold us down”.

Save Yourself will be released online on Friday April 9.
Jah Cure begins his first official tour of Africa this summer after which he has several performances in Mexico. He then returns to Jamaica to headline the International Night at Reggae SumFest in July.

The recent discovery of a fake Jah Cure Facebook page has forced Jah Cure's management to take a zero tolerance in protecting Jah Cure's intellectual property. The page which was connected to the email 'universaljahcure@live.com ', since been taken down by Facebook, sought to lure unsuspecting fans and promoters with promises of dubs and information on the artiste. The page also offered booking services for the artiste.

This fraud was brought to the attention of Danger Zone Music Group (DZMG) by an unsuspecting promoter from Belize who paid for dubs through this page and when the dubs weren't furnished approached DZMG querying the transaction. It was at this moment that the promoter realized that he had been scammed.

CEO of the Danger Zone Music Group Delmar 'Della Danger' Drummond while upset about the situation believes promoters need to be extra careful when dealing with international transactions with artistes, he stated: "Only DZMG, SoBe Entertainment and Caribbean Entertainment are authorized to handle Jah Cure's bookings. I would like to extend my sincerest apologies to whoever has fallen victim to this scam but we have to be ever vigilant as with the advances in modern technology many nefarious characters are using the web to rob innocent unsuspecting persons".

DZMG has acted with urgency in seeking to curtail the proliferation of fake Jah Cure pages on social networking sites like Facebook. The company will also cooperate with legal authorities in anyway possible to ensure that the intellectual property of Jah Cure is not violated.

DZMG wishes to advise those interested in legally procuring Jah Cure material to contact them at delladanger@gmail.com .

Damn son! i think we're friends....although I noticed he spelt his MySpace link wrong (it was missing the s as in freejahScure) from the jump.....I just couldn't bother to tell him to fix de ting eh....Cause I am sure somebody getting paid to do that ...uzime....

Danger Zone Music Group wishes to express its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Mikey Pelpa. Over the years Danger Zone has had a productive relationship with the artiste and is deeply saddened by his untimely passing. CEO of Danger Zone Music Group Delmar ‘Della Danger’ Drummond who was a friend of Mikey Pelpa summed up the mood in the camp: “Mikey Pelpa was one of the young artistes on the Danger Zone roster. Words can’t explain the grief that has gripped the Danger Zone family; we are yet to come to terms with the news of the death of this young talented artiste. All members of the team remember Mikey as an artiste who was trying to use music to bring people together and who believed in the vision of Danger Zone Music Group which is Unification Through Music. Danger Zone misses Mikey Pelpa”.

Mikey Pelpa is noted for his collaboration with Lymie Murray, Emergency on the ‘Jam Down’ rhythm, Parental Guide on the Cloud Nine rhythm, Say What U Want on the ‘Pay Back’ rhythm and his recent release Mama Don't Worry At All. He was acclaimed for his focus on family values and once revealed: "Di yute dem haffi show respect and remember seh dem parents a di real guide. Me never diss my mother yet cause a she a mi real inspiration and if the yute dem inna the society focus pon that and transfer it to dem brother then evil will cut in half".

According to The Jamaica Star, Pelpa (born Micheal Augustus Lynch) drowned while trying to escape US authorities after traveling from Bahamas to Fl coast by boat.

International Reggae artiste Jah Cure has been crowned "Vocalist of the Year" at the recently held Excellence in Music and Entertainment (EME) Awards. The award show which was held on Thursday February 4, also saw Jah Cure walking away with the awards for "Collaboration of the Year" for his "Call On Me" collaboration with Phyllisia and "Song of the Year" in the Reggae category for the same song.

These awards are a validation of the tremendous body of work that Jah cure has done over the past year. The artiste’s smash hit "Call On Me" was number on numerous charts both in Jamaica and overseas. Jah Cure also released several other songs over the period including hits such as "You’ll Never Find," "Protect you Like a Soldier," and "Unconditional Love ."

The Sobe Entertainment/Danger Zone Music Group artiste also completed a successful tour of Europe where he performed on the same stage with dancehall godfather Shabba Ranks at the Amsterdam Reggae Festival. In late 2009 Jah Cure had several successful shows in Germany, Belgium and France. In France Jah Cure performed at Club Glazart on November 3 and Cabaret Suavage on November 2. In Belgium he took the stage at the Vooruit Club on November 1. All Jah Cure’s dates were sold out.

Jah Cure is very happy at being recognised for the work that he has done over the past year: “Winning these awards is like a fulfilment of long hours in the studio and on the road. It’s like a good song that you have worked on for a long time and then it becomes a big hit. The work will continue as I want to ensure that the fans can always look to me for good music to give them strength.

Jah Cure is now set to release his latest track; a collaboration with Grammy winner Keri Hilson and ace song writer Poo Bear. The track is called "World Cry" and was recorded at Shaggy’s Big Yard Studio in Jamaica, Los Angeles and Miami.

The artiste is currently in Trinidad and Tobago doing a series of shows as part of that country’s Carnival celebrations and is expected to perform the soca remix of "Call on Me" at several events with soca queen Alison Hinds.

Jah Cure just released a statement that DNA results prove that he is not the father of a newborn.

There have been recent media reports about a DNA test result that involved Jah Cure. While not wishing to join the media circus that has ensued because of these revelations, Jah Cure wishes to outline a few facts and settle the matter once and for all. Jah Cure has supported the mother throughout her pregnancy and had his father and manager be with her at the time of delivery in the US. His support for her throughout this period was unwavering. Before the birth of the child Jah Cure requested a DNA test, a request which the mother refused. Despite this, Jah Cure continued to support the child and the mother.

Now that the DNA test has been done and it has been shown that he is not the father, Jah Cure wishes to move on.

The fact is that the most important individual in this whole affair is the child and the longer that this continues the more damage is being done to the child. Jah cure will not now abandon the child but wishes that the media respect the privacy of the parties as the child is indeed innocent and did not contribute to the mistakes of the adults involved.

The messed up part is that the mother refused DNA before the birth, Jah Cure sent his father and brother to be with her for the birth and he has to deal with a child that he probably had a bond with. the even more messed up part is this is not the first time he has been accused of fathering a child (a son that time) that was not his. Like I always say when I give opinion, who am I to judge right??? But some women just see entertainers and just think $$$$$$$. I hope that is a lesson for him and other artists to play it safe. After all, according to him condoms "are a must." And true to the press release the child is the ultimate victim. At least Jah Cure is doing a positive thing by still being there. Cyan make de chile pay for her mother mistake.

Yow..I must admit I was one of those 'media reports' posting info that Jah Cure was arrested in Trinidad. Now this is a lesson in not doing things in a rush eh. I usually would have comment and said my two cents (which of course in this case would have been that I hope this was wrong etc, afterall I am a fan) but shit I was in a rush so I just put the basics. Imagine today in my Communications class the topic was journalists and their code of ethics. Anyway long story short according to The Nation Newspaper (Barbados), his publicist explained the circumstances of Jah Cure's accompaniment by police to the local station. (See full article below)

JAH CURE'S PUBLICIST says he was never arrested, despite recent media
reports of the SoBeEntertainment/ Danger Zone recording artiste having a stint
in a Trinidad jail.
"Jah Cure's trip to Trinidad and Tobago was not without incident. On Saturday, November 7, while staying at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Port-of-Spain, Jah Cure was greeted by police officers along with the promoter who claimed that Jah Cure owed him money," read the statement from his publicist Alykhat.
The promoter with whom Jah Cure had worked in the past was in
negotiations with the artiste for another performance but negotiations had
broken down, he added.
"In order to settle the matter, Jah Cure and members of his management team accompanied the promoter and the police to a nearby police station where the promoter's deposit was returned. "The artiste was not arrested as reported by some media outlets and was able to fulfil his confirmed date at Guaracara Park on the same night. Jah Cure performed to over 10 000 people."

Jah Cure is now home in Jamaica preparing for his upcoming
dates in St Kitts, Barbados and Grenada. (MS)

I am glad that this got taken care of. After his stint in prison, I think that is the last place Jah Cure would want to end up, without good cause anyway. Aight well that's it for now. As usual I will update with any changes, seen.

On the night of Tuesday, April 7th at the prestigious Cable & Wireless Golf Club, Jah Cure had his official album launch for The Universal Cure. It is the first album for the Sobe Entertainment /Danger Zone Music Group artist since his release from prison two years ago.

The event was catered by renowned decorator/caterer Jacqui Tyson. Drink specials included The Universal Cure and Call On Me drink mixes.

And making sure the music was just right were Jigsy and Penny Bling of Danger Zone Sound System.

So here's the breakdown of the night's events.

* Cure made his grand entrance with his entourage which included Sobe/DGMG CEO/manager Delmar Drummond, CEO Cecile Barker and their international guests

* Cure greeted guests

*Dr. Sonjah Stanley-Niaah, author and lecturer in Cultural Studies at UWI, welcomed everyone to an amazing evening.

*Jah Cure made a presentation of the The Universal Cure album to Chevaughn Harris of the National Library, as is customary that all works, written and oral, be recorded in Jamaica’s national library.

*Dr. Stanley-Niaah then delivered the keynote address. Centering on a paper she did on the topic ‘Reflection from the Margin: Jah Cure, Rastafari and the new leadership through stardom’, Dr. Stanley-Niaah said Jah Cure was considered one of Reggae’s High Priests. She said while incarcerated, Jah Cure was not a voiceless prisoner, he sang to rehabilitate himself, both for his own benefit and that of his fans. She said Jah Cure was among greats like Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Buju Banton, Garnet Silk, Capleton and Luciano who were leaders in the Rastafarian faith using music to spread the message to the world.

* Musicologist Dennis Howard put Jah Cure under the spotlight live on stage, posing questions that many have been asking, looking at Jah Cure’s journey and struggles to his perceived lack of powerful songs as a free man compared to when he was incarcerated.

*Next was the world premiere of the music video of the lead song from the album, "Call On Me" featuring the talented Phyllisia, and directed by RHONA FOX!

Jah Cure and Phylissia

* Jah Cure and his three back-up singers were backed by Antidote band while they performed songs from the album. Then Phylissia joined him on stage to perform his latest single "Call On Me". Check out the live performance!!!

Reggae star Jah Cure is on the brink of releasing his highly anticipated album, The Universal Cure (SoBe/DangerZone), and is back with a new hit single that's heating up airwaves across the Caribbean, and beyond.

"Call On Me," a romantic duet recorded with SoBe labelmate, R&B/Pop singer Phyllisia, is already topping reggae playlists worldwide. Now the alluring single is bound to place Jah Cure at the very top of reggae charts, as he looks forward to the release of his new album come early April.

"I feel excited about this album, because this is the first album that I've made since I've been out of incarceration," states the soulful singer, whom many say is reminiscent of the great Bob Marley. "When all the other albums were released, I was in incarceration, so this is the first album that I made as a free man, and the first album launch I'll ever have in my life. So this album is more sentimental, and I'm out here to make it grow and make it connect to the fans more. It's a joy to be able to promote it to my fans and to the media, and to participate in platforms like Facebook and YouTube, and advertise it as a free man to the free world."

The video was commissioned by
SoBe Entertainment and DangerZone Music Group. It was shot over a two-day period in luscious Ocho Rios, Jamaica, with locations spanning the luxurious Royal Plantation resort and surrounding beaches. The video was directed by Rhona Fox and is slated for release in the upcoming week.

Jah Cure and Spragga Benz will headline a concert in Guyana on April 4th. It will be the first in a series of regional peace concerts. Peace Fest will be held in seven Caribbean countries.

Trinidadian promoter Andre Rochford who is spearheading the event cites the need to raise awareness of and generate discussion on crime and violence in our region.

The concerts which will be an all white affair (in a sign of unity) starts off in Guyana to pay tribute to the victims of the two massacres that gripped the country a year ago.

Some people are questioning the inclusion of Spragga Benz in this concert event. The man just lost his son to a random act of violence. What less right does he have than you or me to take part in the event???? I notice that Jah Cure loves to wear white so he will definitely fit right in. By the way though he went proclaimed his innocence throughout, Jah Cure was sent to jail for a violent act. I just feel that we should just look for the positive. We are all human, on this one earth that we all have to share. Let's try to find the good in all situations. One.
