Jamaica Carnival, the brainchild of legendary bandleader Byron Lee, has been officially confirmed as canceled by organizers. According to a local paper, Sheila Lee, Byron's widow sites the musician's death in November as one of the reasons for the cancellation
She also cites the current economic climate (lack of sponsors, government and corporate) as a deciding factor.
Jamaica Carnival will return in 2011 for the 21st anniversary celebrations.
Meantime, celebrating 21 years this year is Bacchanal Jamaica.
Destra Garcia will be there with her live band for Bacchanal J’ouvert on April 17th at the Mas Camp.
Bacchanal Jamaica and sponsor Digicel wishes to advise the public that their carnival parade will be taking place on the streets of Kingston on April 19th, 2009.
The carnival parade titled “Bacchanal Gone Hollywood” will begin at 10am on Mona Road and will end at the Mas Camp. Bacchanal Jamaica boasts nine costume sections and live entertainment including Trinidadian group Imij & Co., DJ Smoke from Renaissance, DJ Omar C from Sparkles, DJ Billy and Trinidad’s very own DJ Private Ryan.
