I don't know cricket. I probably say that every time I write a post about the sport. I do know that their is a bias against small island players in the sport. For years I have been hearing of how Shane Shillingford like other Dominicans before him, has been denied a spot on the West Indies Cricket Team. Well, he is finally there and guess what??? His first test match he is already making a name for himself and pulling up the team from their blistering, losing streak.

According to DigicelCricket.com

Debutant off spinner Shane Shillingford made the best of a rain curtailed and soggy first day of the First Digicel Test at the Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad. The tall Dominican enjoyed a fine start to his international career in grim conditions, as he extracted the two South African openers at a cost of five miserly runs from a six over spell.
The Proteas – the second highest ranking Test team in the world – closed the day in the uncomfortable position of 70 for 3, with veteran batting maestro Jacques Kallis on 6 and nightwatchman Paul Harris not yet off the mark.

Shillingford, delivering with a bounding run up and sprightly action, accounted for Alviro Petersen via the lbw route for 31 and Captain Graeme Smith was caught at first slip by his nemesis Dwayne Bravo for 23.

The day’s proceedings left the West Indies in the unfamiliar position of a slight ascendency on the opening day of a Test match against a top ranked side.

Yes, my boy. Do your thing. Make DA proud!!!!

So Lil Kim thinks that Nicki Minaj is copying her and needs to show respect...now Drake and 50 Cent are chiming in on the issue...see below.

Lil Kim needs to stop being so insecure. We know you are the Queen Bee Honey...You don't see Madonna going around bitching about Lady Gaga stealing her swag or Grace Jones pissed of about Amber Rose re-doing her iconic poses without so much as a mention of her name or Mary J Blige or Faith Evans tripping over Beyonce's blond lace-fronts....

Styles/trends/looks they all come and go...it's a cycle... So chill out already...stupes

One thing, Nicki Minaj is really growing on me. The more collabs she does, the more I like her. I especially like her on Ludacris "My Chick Bad", Usher's "Little Freak" and Gyptian's "Hold You". What I don't like is the live lip-synching....If you check out the vids below, you can hear her real voice and it doesn't sound that bad.....so y do it??? I mean I would not come to Best of The Best to hear her sound exactly like the album... You have talent my girl...(at least I hope so)....don't let the machine do all the work.

It has been a long time, but Michelle “Miche” Williams of Catalyst Music is back with a new track called “Run (National Pride)”. The song is featured on Faluma Africa/Faluma Records’ compilation album for the 2010 World Cup entitled “Laduma” which was released on May 14th, 2010. Miche produced the song for Catalyst Music and it was written by herself and Tony Brown of Mad Architect Music (who also mixed and mastered the song).

This is Miche’s debut single as a solo artist, her most famous collaboration being the melodic “Trinidad” with Jah Bami and Red Lyte. She is no stranger to the production-side of things though, and she is still the only female producer in the industry, working with some of the top Caribbean Artists such as Benjai, Dawg E. Slaughter, Michelle Sylvester, Gailann, and Maximus Dan to name a few.

Show your national pride and support for the compilation, you will not be disappointed. It is available for purchase on iTunes: h, and many other online retailers.

Look out for more releases from Miche and an upcoming riddim from Catalyst Music in the near future. Formerly Catalyst Entertainment, they are back in business under the new name Catalyst Music. For more information, email catalystentpr@yahoo.com.

Foxy Brown appeared on The Mo'nque Show on BET last night. First off let me say she is looking very healthy....real thick bwoy, with long weave flowing past her rear. She walked on to loud cheers from the audience. When she greeted Mo'nique and guest Pam Grier she had tears streaming down her face and it was an evidently emotional moment.

Here is a clip from the interview where she talks about her hearing loss, asking Pam Grier's permission to use the name Foxy Brown and how she has been humbled.

So I recently announced on the site that Diddy was managing Nicki Minaj and Rick Ross. Hey Billboard said it too! Well now Diddy is saying don't believe the hype.

According to a U-Stream video he said:
“For the record, as I said before, don’t believe the rumors. I have not made no announcement yet, don’t believe no rumors about anything y’all hear. me and Nick, we just cool. I like her style. Rick Ross, he’s my brother. There’s no management announcements or none of that. So everybody, worry about what you’re worrying about. It’s all right for people to know each other and have an admiration towards each other and maybe pick each other’s brains for advice. I will be making an announcement in a couple of weeks on some things. But right now, everybody let’s chill out and be cool and stay focused on being positive…”

Source

OK so does that mean he is not managing her period or he's not managing her yet. You know what I think Diddy wants to be the one to drop the news himself and that's what this whole thing is about. Anyways, living my life in the meantime.

When my mom visited me at school earlier this year, the one thing I implored her not to forget was my bitters. I put it in juice and I drink it with warm water for a tummy ache. I've been trying to convince my flatmates of the wonders of bitters but so far no success. Any ways it's good to know there are lots of people who share my love of bitters and who would be crushed at the thought of a bitters shortage. Check out this interesting story about Rachel Maddows bitters scare:

She speaks with Giselle Laronde-West (1986 Miss Eorld Winner)who is Communications Manager at Angostura and Genevieve Jodhan Executive Manager of Export Sales and Business Development. The ladies oth went on the Rachel Maddow show to clear up the International Angostura bitters shortage issue and declare it over!!!! Yay!!!

Nicki Minaj, recently fired her manager and I guess she now has one in none other than Sean "Diddy" Combs who as word has it, is co-managing Rick Ross as well. Peep this snippet from Nicki's interview with Details Magazine where she speaks on females in the rap game, her bisexuality, signing women's breasts, being a role model and lots more:

Details: Your father set fire to your home when you were a kid in Queens, New York. What happened?

Nicki Minaj: He drank a lot and did drugs, and he would get violent when he did. When he set fire to the house, he was attempting to kill my mother. She got out before it burned all the way down. I’ve always had this female-empowerment thing in the back of my mind—because I wanted my mother to be stronger, and she couldn’t be. I thought, “If I’m successful, I can change her life.”

Details: What can women get away with in hip-hop that men can’t?

Nicki Minaj: I have a lot of freedom to be crazy. I can rap in a London accent, make weird faces, wear spandex, wigs, and black lipstick. I can be more creative than the average male rapper. And I can show my boobs. Guys can’t do that.

Details: As an openly bisexual rapper, do you think hip-hop is getting more gay-friendly?

Nicki Minaj: I think the world is getting more gay-friendly, so hip-hop is too. But it’s harder to imagine an openly gay male rapper being embraced. People view gay men as having no street credibility. But I think we’ll see one in my lifetime.

Details: As younger and younger fans come to your shows, do you feel pressure to tone down the racier elements of your persona?

Nicki Minaj: I do. I’m a role model now. I didn’t know I was gonna have 13-year-old fans, so I’ve tried to change a few things here and there. But I also know that the girls don’t want me to be Miley Cyrus, either.

Role model, huh? That's opening up herself to a lot of criticisms. I guess we can give a kudo or two for at least even making some small effort. I must say though, she is definitely growing on me.

Ya I know I recently posted that Nicki Minaj was touring with Rihanna and Ke$ha. Seems she will not be on the tour after all....

Why? Well she tweeted that it's to work on her album.

“Barbz I'm sorry 2 say I will not be going out on RiRi's tour. I've decided 2 use that time 4 the completion of my album. Hope u understand.

Not sure about that, I would not let an opportunity like that go. It's where you test your skills, where you connect with fans, and a sure way to get paid. Good luck with the album my girl.

The man who called 911 as Michael Jackson lay dying in his rented mansion told police he was stunned by what he saw in the singer's bedroom.

Alberto Alvarez, who worked as Jackson's logistics director, told investigators that after receiving a distress call from another worker June 25, he rushed up the stairs of Jackson's home and entered a bedroom to find the singer lying on a bed with his arms outstretched and his eyes and mouth open.

At his side, Jackson's personal physician, Dr. Conrad Murray, was administering CPR with one hand.

"Alberto, Alberto, come quickly," Murray said, according to a statement obtained by The Associated Press. "He had a reaction, he had a bad reaction."

Two of the star's children, Prince and Paris, came in the room and cried as they saw Murray trying to save their father. They were quickly ushered away.

The account and other statements obtained by the AP depict a grisly scene in Jackson's room in the final minutes before paramedics arrived. Alvarez also states that Murray interrupted CPR and delayed calling paramedics so he could collect drug vials at the scene.

Jackson's death at age 50 was ruled a homicide caused by an overdose of the powerful anesthetic propofol and other sedatives.

The possibility that Murray may have tried to hide evidence is likely to be a focus as prosecutors move ahead with their involuntary manslaughter case against him.

Alvarez told police he arrived at Jackson's home around 10:20 a.m. He was awaiting instructions for the day in a security trailer outside Jackson's rented mansion when, at 12:17 p.m., his phone rang. It was Jackson's personal assistant Michael Amir Williams, who said Jackson was in trouble.

Alvarez said he was "frozen and stunned" when he saw Jackson on the bed.

Murray then grabbed a few vials with rubber tops and told Alvarez to put them in a bag, Alvarez told investigators. Alvarez picked up a plastic bag from the floor and Murray put the bottles inside, then Murray told Alvarez to put that plastic bag inside a brown canvas bag, according to the account.

Alvarez said Murray then told him to remove an IV bag from a stand and put it in a blue canvas bag. He did, and noticed the bag had a connector with a milky white substance in it. Alvarez didn't say what happened to the bags, nor did he identify what was in the vials.

So we have interviewed Soca artists based in the Region, what of the artist in America for example trying to make it in this genre. Check out Ricardo Drue who is not letting geography prevent him from representing for the region!

1. What is your definition of Soca music?
To me Soca music is a music of energy, Soca music otherwise known as Soul Calypso, is a music of dance and uplifting vibes. Its one of the few sounds that will make you move with out even knowing it. lol

2. Most people associate Soca with Trinidad, much like Reggae to Jamaica; is Trinidad the authority on Soca?
I would say yes, Soca music originated in Trinidad and Tobago from calypso, I mean other islands have influenced the sound of Soca which all adds up to what it is today!

3. Some say Soca is just for Carnival, what say you?
I would have to disagree, but, because of the hype of carnival, the excitement of Soca is usually the biggest around carnival time, but we as artist need to make Soca music for the year so its not considered seasonal .

4. How has being a Soca artist enriched your life?
Soca music as i said is a music of energy, it allows you to be free, as an artist you have to be able to deliver that kinda vibe everytime you record or perform...so it has allowed to be an easy going person, taught me how to free up myself and not be so uptight .

5. Where have you not been for Carnival that you would like to visit in the next five years?
Well I haven't been to a couple of countries like Jamaica (but i'm going in April for the first time) cayman islands, and Antigua, Grenada, Guyana and St. Lucia…. I am ashamed lol

6. What does Soca need to get international recognition that regional genres like Reggae and Reggaeton do?
Soca needs a sound for example you can listen to Reggeaton and tell its Reggeaton or Reggae and tell its Reggae; Soca has so many different variations (which is not always a bad ting) that people tend to get confused and go for music that is a bit more basic, it may also need someone like a P Diddy, or Jay Z to take the music seriously or catch vibe for the music and an artist to deliver it properly.

Read Ricardo's answers to our 20 Questions by clicking HERE!

Bookmark and Share

Shawn "Da Ma$tamind" Noel is one of the leading producers in the Soca industry right now, he has produced songs that have won Soca Awards, COTT Awards and spurred artists like Bunji Garlin and Shurwayne Winchester to International Soca Monarch Royalty. I could not think of a better candidate to kick of this round of questions on Soca, the genre, the industry, the culture, the movement.

1. What is your definition of Soca music?
To me Soca music is an eclectic blend of music inspired by the diverse population of Trinidad & Tobago and the West Indies. It’s very rhythmic, very energetic and has a lot of our soul in it. Soca is just who we are…

2. Most people associate Soca with Trinidad, much like Reggae to Jamaica; is Trinidad the authority on Soca?
I don’t see Trinidad & Tobago as the authority on Soca. While it may have been born out of Calypso, a music known to be indigenous to T&T, I think it has evolved quite a lot into a music that now represents the entire region. From country to country there is a wide variety of styles within Soca music, and we are all now influenced by each others’ music. So to say T&T is the authority… I disagree.

3. Some say Soca is just for Carnival, what say you?
Can I say “Bull^#%$”? Because that is my very honest opinion. Apart from Christmas music, to my knowledge, Soca is the only music that is confined to that couple months of the year. As a result the majority of Soca music is tailored around that season. But I believe so much more can be done, so many different topics to sig about, so much more music that can be created for outside the Carnival season. Which is why Mastamind Productions produces and releases music all year ‘round.

4. How has being a Soca artist enriched your life?
I love to entertain and I’ve always loved to see people enjoy themselves. So when that happens, that is the most fulfilling part of it. I’m just a sucker for people smiling, being happy and enjoying themselves. I’m just glad to be able to entertain and help make that happen.

5. Where have you not been for Carnival that you would like to visit in the next five years?
Believe it or not I’ve not yet been to Notting Hill Carnival. I’d really love to go. But, I think my ultimate Carnival destination is Rio de Janeiro in Brazil! If I had to pick one… Viva Brasil!!!

6. What does Soca need to get international recognition that regional genres like Reggae and Reggaeton do?
It goes back again to the fact that Soca music is so seasonal. If you look at Reggae for instance, the topics are varied. They sing about a host of different topics and ideas that people worldwide can relate to. Apart from that, we don’t really treat our own music with the love and respect it deserves. I will go to my grave with the belief that our music is sorely under-appreciated and only until that changes will we be able to make any moves forward. We also need to learn to be more professional about our approach to the business side of music. There’s quite a lot to be done; hopefully one day these wrongs can be righted.

Well now since you made it to the end...click HERE to learn more about Shawn and read his responses to our 20 Questions.
