This year's edition of the International Soca Awards is dedicated to the ladies in the industry. 2009 marks year 7 and the theme of Lucky Seven seems rather fitting as the ceremony has been a success over the years, gaining increasing recognition and prestige. Seven draws reference to the diatonic scale in music which is made up of seven pitches- again bringing the focus back to the music.
There are so many women in Soca now doing their thing: Alison Hinds, Destra Garcia, Claudette Peters, Harella Georges, FayAnn Lyons-Alvarez, Denise Belfon, Patrice Roberts, Zoelah, Ms.Alysha, Calypso Rose, Tizzy just to name a few. Can't wait to see which artists are honored at the show. And some might beg to differ but I think that luck does play a part in the success of an artist. I mean look at Patrice I think she is very lucky to have a link with Machel, she has the talent yes, but having him in her corner just catapulted her career. Same with Alison Hinds. As luck would have it she got to sing with a local group as a teenager and the rest is history. Obviously hard work, dedication, good producers, stage presence all combine to impact their success. Take a look at my three favorite female Soca artists Destra,Denise, and Alison (in no particular order-some would say in order of bumpa though.lol) performing "Obsessive Winers" at International Soca Monarch 2009.
Currently, several islands are bidding for the iSA 2009 ceremony. Anyone looking for updates can log on to socaawards.com. SAO (Soca Awards Organization) launched their new website on June 15th 2009. So far there isn't much, but voting is scheduled to start June 22nd. So log on and vote for your favotites!

Curious about how Mel B got those rock hard abs?
She said to Grazia Magazine: “I’m honestly not body-obsessed – I can’t be with three kids and a husband.
“My husband likes my muscles, but then he’s seen me every which way over the
past eight years– including when I put on 42lbs after my last pregnancy and
he always loves my body.
“In fact, on top of all my exercise, I have sex with him five times a day
maybe that has something to do with it. I have to admit, I’m a nymphomaniac
with him. It’s sexercise!”
Mel – who is currently starring in Las Vegas burlesque show ‘Peepshow’ –
also dismissed claims she has had surgery to give her such a well-defined
figure.
Lauryn Hill, who had a series of planned concerts in Europe this summer, has canceled all tour dates.
A spokesperson for the Stockholm Jazz Festival, where the former Fugee had been slated to headline, told the Associated Press that she had been informed by Lauryn's agent that all her scheduled European dates have been canceled, citing unspecified "health reasons" (mental, maybe???) as the cause of the cancellations.
Earlier this year, it was reported that she may be pregnant with her sixth child with Rohan Marley.
Maybe she finally taking advice and seeing a shrink??????

On Tuesday Tina Johnson-Finn was cleared of all charges surrounding an event at which she was hired to impersonate Toni Braxton. Judge Robby Rodrigues ruled it was not clear whether the Las Vegas singer knew whether or not concert goes had been led to believe that she was really Braxton.
Johnson-Finn and her husband Raymond Finn had long insisted since February that they like the Suriname people were duped by concert promoter Angel Ventura and his girlfriend, Signet Sampson.
They are expected to stand trial in July. Ventura initially said that Johnson-Finn knew about the scam from the beginning, according to police, but he later retracted that allegation.

fter three months in a Suriname jail, Trina Johnson-Finn, a Las Vegas entertainer accused of posing as Toni Braxton at a concert in February, was released by a judge Friday. But she could face more jail time today.
Johnson-Finn had long insisted that she was contracted to play the part of Braxton for a private party organized by Concert promoter Angel Ventura and his girlfriend, Signet ampson. But the event, Raymond Finn, Johnson-Finn`s husband, said turned in to a publicly promoted concert they were unaware of.
Only at the concert did they realize that Ventura and Sampson had actually sold tickets for a public event featuring the `real` Toni Braxton. Despite protesting their innocence, the Finns were jailed in February but Raymond Finn was released after two weeks in jail while prosecutors kept Johnson-Finn jailed.
Ventura and his girlfriend are expected to stand trial in July. Ventura initially said that Johnson-Finn knew about the scam from the beginning, according to police but later said she was not involved in the scheme.
Johnson-Finn is set to be present at her sentencing today and prosecutors have requested she serve a one-year sentence with nine months of it suspended, meaning that she could be released on time served.
Concert promoter Angel Ventura and his girlfriend, Signet Sampson, are expected to stand trial in July.
