Aime Cesaire the noted French Poet and activist who has left us. Born in Martinique on June 26th 1913, he was very proud of his black heritage and is noted with coining the phrase "negritude".
He studied in Paris where he cofounded a literary review called The Black Student. After his return to Martinique he became a member of the French National Assembly and served as mayor of Martinique's main town, Fort-de-France, from 1945 until his retirement in 2001.
His poetry and plays, including a black adaptation of Shakespeare's The Tempest, are regularly performed and studied in France. He died Thursday April 17th at a Fort-de-France hospital.
