An exhibition tracing the history and showcasing artifacts of Mashramani celebration in Guyana will be held during the period February 20 to 28 at the Guyana National Museum.The event is being organised by the visual arts sub-committee of the Mahsramani Secretariat, the organizing body for this year’s festival held under the theme “One Dream, One Celebration, One Design in 2009.”
The committee is calling on interested persons or agencies. Photographs can be sent via email; mashsecretariat@gmail.com or sent to the Mashramani Secretariat, 91 Middle Street, South Cummingsburg before February 7. The photographic exhibition is among the new additions to Mashramani 2009 which will also include an inter-Neighbourhood Democratic Council competition for the best aesthetics and a child art and essay competition.

Estelle will be performing at the Grammys She is one of several UK artists performing at the show on Sunday Feb. 8th at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, CA. They include Coldplay, U2, Paul McCartney and Adele. Estelle is nominated for Song Of The Year and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for her song "Come Over" feat. Kanye West, which of course she will perform.
75-year-old Manu Dibango of Cameroon is suing Michael Jackson for use of a part of his 1972 song "Soul Makossa" as the riff on "Wanna Be Startin' Something" one of many hot, hot, hot tracks off his 1983 Thriller album. So how does Rihanna get in the picture???
She licensed the same hook from Jackson for "Don't Stop the Music" ( remember this:Mama se, mma sa ma makossa???????)but they did not go as far back as the original source, namely Mr Dibango.
Makossa means dance in the Cameroonian language Duala ...Take a listen to the original....to be fair he sings (mama ko mama sa ma makossa....
So here is a live version of the song...Im sure you want to know what Manu Dibango looks like although this footage was shot several decades ago....
Now Michael's version, written by Quincy Jones, sings Ma Ma Se, Ma Ma Sa, Ma Ma Coo Sa (swahili???) So I guess that will be their defense. Yes the song was influenced by Dibango's song but the lyrics are not exact.
Jay-Z sampled the beat of the song "Sould Makossa" for his song "Face Off" off the In My Lifetime Vol. 1 album. But that shit is seriously xxxxxx rated so I'm not gonna post here....Anyways, he's not facing a lawsuit so I guess he handled his handle!!!!!!!!
So a Paris court will on Feb. 17 make a decision on wether the case will move forward. Mr Dibango stands to win $600,000.

Between those years, several others have raised Jamaica's profile among the close to one billion viewers of the event around the world each year. The Caribbean International Network (CIN) will air Rising Stars on Channel 73 in New York starting Sunday Feb. 15th at 7P.M
The show hosted by Miss Jamaica World 2007 Yendi Phillips will see its second showing on CIN. Rising Stars is the number one reality talent show in Jamaica featuring local untapped talent. It is the local American Idol.
Jamaica kicked off Reggae Month with a service on Sunday Feb. 1st at the Fellowship Tabernacle in Kingston. Organized by the Ministry of Information Culture Youth and Sports, Reggae month focuses on the genre which originated in Jamaica. There will be concerts and simposia throughout the island and Reggae Industry Awards and Dinner at Jamaica.
Of course a lot of focus will be on Bob Marley's contribution to the genre. Though very much revered in his native land, he is still not a national hero. That is the subject of a discussion being organized by Zync TV and Street Hype Newspaper of New York at the Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts at 80 Hanson Place (corner of South Portland), Brooklyn, NY 11217.

Just in time for the Carnival Season, Esclav Band releases their follow up to their debut album Slaves For Music. It's called Lights, Camera, Action! From just the name it sounds like a real hit with a little something for everyone. Some of the more popular tracks on the album include the title track 'Lights, Camera Action", "Express Yourself," "I feel it," "Take Ur Time', and "One Nation" featuring Wayne ‘Benji’ Benjamin.
This work of musical art was produced at O5 studio in Canefield by Yohann ‘Puskey’ Ferrol and features talented vocalists including former Digicel Rising Star finalist Tasha Peltier, Midian ‘DJ Midian’ Pacquette, Kelis ‘Koko Killer’ Mitchel and Carlian ‘Falco’ James. Other band members include Brenton ‘Brenti’ Vidal on lead keyboards, Melchour ‘Tile’ Joseph on rhythm keyboards and Victor ‘Bassy’ Mictchel controls the bass. Yohann ‘Puskey’ Ferrol also features on the drums. Guest vocalists on the album include Kurt ‘Rikkashay’ Saverin on ‘Take Ur Time’, Clement ‘Bambi’ Jno Baptiste on ‘Express Yourself’ and Alyssia ‘Lyssie’ Ferrol featuring on ‘Ice Box’.

In 2006 a few guys including some of the current members produced a couple popular singles namely ‘Super Mario’ and D-X which caught the attention of the organizers of the Cable & Wireless Creole in Park (now LIME) and they were challenged to form a band in order to play at the event; hence the birth of Esclav Band. The Cable and Wireless Creole in the Park was the first official performing platform for the band and it has been no turning back since.

So I went to town (Roseau) on Saturday to check out the parade and opening activities. Man before I blink it was over. Anyways I got some pics of the parade itself and shots of the pageant contestants, officials and performers. The event was held at Festival City AKA the Pottersville Savannah. Though it started on time, patrons had to wait for mass at the nearby St. Alphonsus Catholic Church to end.
One thing I had to mention though. I noticed that (apart from LIME's obvious presence) most of the sponsors in the parade were alcohol companies: Heinekin, Hennessy, Kubuli, Carib. Now I am not saying that they should not sponsor Carnival, after all I'm sure business is very good for them at this time, so they should give back to the community. But I did not see many businesses with a strong presence in the parade. Thats something to think about!
Oh yeah and one more thing. Before I left the park, the flagwavers were performing and I was just like amazed that adults would let these young girls perform the way they did. Those girls came on stage and I'm hearing "when you want it fasta, Imma give you fasta/when you want it deeper Imma give you deeper" and putting some serious wine on the stage. Now me, I am close to 30 I can go in the club and wine deeper and harder and fasta till the cows come home. But when I see an 8 year old, doing that on a stage and other kids looking at that, guess who I blame? The ADULT who not only chaperoned her but more than likely taught her that it was OK to dance like that. I believe having a group like flag wavers is a fantastic idea. It is an opportunity for young girls to congregate and do something fun, of course its great payback to perform on stage at carnival time. I do believe that the organizers of these groups should see it as an opportunity to instill good values into these girls, to teach them to be creative (trust me I could have pick a wicked hot playlist with no profanity or age-inappropriate lyrics), and to represent themselves with quality and class! Anyways that is my two cents..and believe me I saw a number of persons with mouth open, shaking their heads just like me....yeah so go and check your pictures now! enough talking....

That is what a letter to the DJ states. So its back to the drawing board. I'm sure he will find a great track for the song. But to make that type of error at this stage in the game, I don't get it. Vybz Kartel is not some novice artist starting in the industry. He needs to either educate himself on copyright or put his knowledge into practice. Ne-yo don't play!
Mavado's "So Special" was carded for a BET premiere on 106 and Park this week. It never happened. At the last minute there was an objection from someone in legal who objected to the "excedssive display of alcohol and 'careless use of women as writhing set dressings!" Say what. Can this person buy a clue????? His video is set in a club... need I say more??? Watch any show on BET during the week and see what percentage of them fits one or both these descriptions.. Well it's no loss for Mavado, since MTV Jamz is picking up where BET left off.
